Top 6 solo destinations in Mexico
from my personal experience as a woman solo traveler
Mexico, renowned for its vibrant culture, fascinating history, and stunning natural landscapes, offers solo travelers a wealth of adventure and self-discovery. If you’re planning a solo journey, explore these 6 must-visit destinations in Mexico that I’ve personally experienced. One of these amazing spots could be your perfect solo travel adventure!
Traveling solo as a woman offers a transformative journey filled with opportunities for self-discovery and empowerment. You get to choose your destinations and create moments for deep connections with yourself, other travelers, and locals. Solo travel isn’t just a trend; it’s a powerful path to personal growth and empowerment. Are you ready?
1. OAxaca City and surrounding areas
Oaxaca City, with its charming colonial architecture and lively markets, has been a favorite solo destination of mine – and a place I now lead group trips! The city is incredibly walkable, making it easy to explore the colorful streets and sample delicious street food. The surrounding areas offer a wealth of experiences, from ancient Zapotec ruins to scenic mountain villages and of course mezcal tasting. Booking tours and transportation is a breeze, and the local community is friendly and welcoming.
2. Playa del carmen
Known for its vibrant nightlife and stunning beaches, Playa Del Carmen is a fantastic destination for solo travelers looking for a lively atmosphere. I traveled to PDC for the Women’s Travel Fest. My visit to Playa was filled with amazing food, beach time, paddle boarding and salsa dancing. The city’s energetic and welcoming vibe make it easy to meet new people and enjoy your time. It’s a great spot to enjoy some relaxation and fun–and delicious food–by the Caribbean Sea.
3. East Cape, Baja California Sur
I traveled to the East Cape in Baja California Sur to visit a friend – does that count as solo travel?– but it was an incredible experience. The region is known for its rugged beauty and off-the-beaten-path adventures. We explored remote beaches and stunning natural landscapes, often requiring a 4WD vehicle to navigate the dirt roads. To be honest, I might not have ventured to some of these spots on my own for the first time, having the confidence and experience now, I’d gladly return solo. Just be sure to bring extra gas and be prepared for some adventurous driving!
4. Valladolid, Yucatán
Valladolid stole my heart with its tranquil charm and relaxed pace. This beautiful city is very walkable, making it easy to explore its picturesque streets, cenotes, and vibrant markets. The nearby cenotes are perfect for a refreshing swim, and the local cuisine is a unique combination of Hispanic, Mayan and Lebanese cuisine. Valladolid offers a peaceful retreat with the convenience of being close to both natural wonders and cultural experiences. It’s the perfect destination for solo travelers seeking a blend of relaxation and exploration.
5. Isla Mujeres , QuintanA ROO
Isla Mujeres is a stunning island escape, though it can be a bit touristy. Despite this, it remains a favorite for its pristine North Beach waters and laid-back vibe. Getting around the island by golf cart adds a touch of fun to your adventures. Staying in neighborhoods away from the bustling ferry and beach areas provides a more tranquil experience while still being close to all the island’s attractions. Isla Mujeres offers a safe and serene environment for solo travelers looking to unwind and soak up some sun.
6. Merida, Yucatan
Mérida is another gem in the Yucatán Peninsula, known for its rich cultural scene and artistic flair. The city is easy to navigate, with taxis readily available for trips to nearby cenotes, the historic site of Uxmal, and even the beach in Progreso. Mérida’s vibrant markets, colonial architecture, and lively cultural events make it a perfect place to explore solo. Its central location also makes it an ideal base for day trips and discovering the surrounding region.
