3 Tourist Activities in Mexico City worth the hype
Sometimes popular tourist attractions are not worth the hype – or are overcrowded. But knowing when and how to enjoy them can make all the difference! Also, what isn’t the right activity for someone may end up being your favorite experience. Here are my recommendations.
In Mexico City, I discovered several activities that I was told were “just for tourists” that ended up being the most memorable activities – and full of locals! Just a reminder that it’s always best to go see for yourself!
Here are three tourist activities I recommend doing in Mexico City (and how to make the most of your visit.)

- Xochimilco Trajiinera experience
This historic agricultural zone on the south side of Mexico City is absolutely worth visiting. Imagine gliding through canals in a wooden boat (trajinera), colorfully decorated. Mariachis come on board to play a song or two, and local families pass in other boats celebrating weddings or just family time. This area is one of the most important agricultural zones of Mexico City, and is where the local produce is grown. It’s absolutely worth a visit to see for yourself.
How to Enjoy Xochimilco:
Explore the rest of Xochimilco – there are historic churches and beautiful markets. THIS TOUR includes the boat ride and a walking tour of the markets!
Hire a local guide. A local guide can make all the difference in your experience. This tour is run by a local woman from the area.
Go early to get in the water before it’s super crowded. You can wait by the boats and ask for someone to take you.

2. Frida Museum (Blue House)
I was told that the Frida Museum was not worth the visit – it’s overhyped! BUT I loved it! I was so inspired by the story and art of Friday, and seeing into her house and life was amazing! She was a role model, a warrior and so talented. The house is in the beautiful Coyoacan neighborhood and the entire tour takes about 2 hours (You can hire a local guide in advance through the Frida Museum or wander at your own pace.)
How to enjoy the Frida Museum:
No videos inside the home/museum!
You MUST buy your ticket in advance from the website or purchase from a licensed guide. THIS TOUR includes delicious churros!
Make sure you read the arrival instructions closely and do not run late. Your entrance time is fixed and you must line up in time to be let in.

3. Teotihuacan
A tour to Teotihuacan is the perfect way to explore the ancient history of Mexico and get outside of the city. Yes, it is a tourist site, but the impact and wonder of ancient civilizations is truly worth the visit.
How to enjoy Teotihuacan:
Because of the distance from the city, and the importance of learning within a cultural context, I highly recommend going with a guided tour. THIS TOUR is run by a local company and offers transportation, a guided tour of the pyramids, and includes mezcal tasting as well (does not include lunch). More adventurous travelers can add a hot air balloon ride like THIS ONE over the pyramids (those leave very early, but are totally worth it!)

Do you go to tourist attractions when you travel? I always visit a place that interests me to see for myself, and in my opinion, these three attractions in Mexico City are worth exploring!
