6 hidden gems you must visit around Jayuya, Puerto Rico

There is so much more to Puerto Rico than San Juan.

I have been to Puerto Rico seven times and it wasn’t until the last time that I ventured outside of the typical tourist zone. Don’t get me wrong! There is plenty to see in and around San Juan, and logistics for travel through Puerto Rico are challenging (i.e. you need a rental car, roads are narrow), but I encourage you to see more of the stunning island. From white sand beaches to lush mountains and stunning waterfalls, and from vineyards to coffee farms, there is so much to explore and so many hidden gems.

Jayuya is a great starting point, central on the island and close to all of these must visit spots. Here are 6 top places to explore around Jayuya, Puerto Rico (for lovers) .

For Food Lovers:

Bar El Refugio – Jayuya

This bar comes alive on the weekends (open Thursday through Sunday) with families and friends, enjoying the beautiful plant-filled rooftop oasis. There is a pool table, boards games, food and drink and lots of spots to enjoy it all. PRO TIP: book your airbnb in this same building and walk to your room after a a fun night and a few drinks:)

For Wine Lovers:

Finca Vista Bella – Utuado

One of Puerto Rico’s very few vineyards, this looks almost like Tuscany! The story and wine are phenomenal (you can only buy it here) as are the views. Book a tour, (it comes with a 4 course lunch sources from local ingredients) and learn about Puerto Rico’s agriculture and the people working to make it a destination for unexpected

For nature lovers:

Local waterfalls or hiking

There are so many beautiful rivers and waterfalls in this area, I would suggest going with someone who knows the trails, but even if you just stop to appreciate the waterfalls on the side of the road, you will be transported. Stop and take a dip at the roadside waterfall Choro de Doña Juana  OR climb Tres Picachos (for very experienced and fit hikers) with a steep elevation gain and views for days.

For local culture enthusiasts:

Taino museum (Cemí) and The Tomato Festival

Jayuya is the heart of Taino (the indigenous people of Puerto Rico) culture, including an annual Taino festival. There is a small museum dedicated to Taino cultural heritage and it is definitely worth a visit. Also in Jayuya is the tomato festival held annually in April –because get this, Jayuya is the tomato capital of Puerto Rico! This area is rich in agriculture and though there are not many tomatoes produced anymore, its still an important part of the cultural heritage.

For beach lovers:

Cabo Rojo and Playa Sucia

This beautiful beach is about two hours south of Jayuya and is completely worth a day trip from the area. It is secluded with white sand, calm clear water and even hiking. Please note you MUST pack everything in – there are no vendors. There are shaded areas to set down your things, first come first serve. Rustic beach day loading!

For coffee lovers:

Cafe Tres Picachos – Jayuya

This family-owned coffee farm is absolutely beautiful! It’s nestled in the hills of Jayuya. Be sure to enjoy breakfast there overlooking the river, then take some photos on the highly instagrammable swinging bridge before buying coffee to take home. Currently they do not offer tours, but they hope to in the near future.

Stay tuned for a group trip to visit the hidden gems of Puerto Rico in 2027!
