5 Essential Travel Apps for 2026

Being prepared when you travel is key, and having the right apps for your trip is a must. From communicating, to itinerary management, to finding your way around, apps can help. I even discovered a great app for tracking cash purchases and expenses! Here are 5 essential apps I use when I travel.

  1. WhatsApp – Free messaging app. High quality photo and video sharing. If you don’t use this I don’t know how you are surviving when you travel. WhatsApp is the best way to communicate with people when you travel from guides to hotel concierge. Oftentimes as well if you can directly contact the business they might offer you a discount from booking online the next time (Ie an airbnb host).
  1. Maps.me – Free map app that can be used offline. These are fast, detailed and entirely offline maps with turn-by-turn navigation. Don’t forget to download the data before you travel.
  1. Shazam – This is a great music identifying app that can be used offline and syncs with your Apple playlist. You just open the app to “shazam” , a song you hear and it recognizes it almost instantly.

4. Smart Receipts – If you need to track cash expenses this app is great and easy to use. You can even submit pdf file reports and spreadsheets to your accounting system. Records cash expenses (or any expenses) in local currency, quickly. You can track dates, price, tax, receipt categories, leave comments, payment methods, etc.

  1. TripIt – This itinerary building and organization app can be used offline. Pro version will find you alternative routes for canceled flights and send out notifications for delayed flights, cancellations, and more from the airlines.

A few tips with apps (that I’ve learned the hard way);

  1. Make sure to download the app AND the data needed. If you are going to be offline, this is KEY.
  2. Download the apps before you travel. Sometimes the internet speed is slow and you will not be able to download the app.
  3. Get a VPN for countries where certain sites are blocked or restricted and be sure it is installed on all the devices you will be using before you travel. I use Nord VPN
